Booking Hotels

Google Maps or Apple Maps are installed on almost every smartphone, so can you get started? Sure, it can, but these two apps can’t do much or only very limited things, which other apps can do much better. With these seven travel apps, you can get to any destination with ease and know your way around.

Skyscanner: for preparation

Before the trip comes the booking, and the search for a suitable and cheap flight can cost time and nerves – until you load Skyscanner on the smartphone. The app not only searches for cheap flights and then forwards them to the booking, but also offers a lot of other comfort. This way, further information can be retrieved from service to meals to legroom. If you don’t want to book right away, you can first put a flight on a checklist and monitor its price development. When searching for flights, filters help to find flights with as few stopovers as possible. Skyscanner is even very helpful for spontaneous holiday planning and displays cheap flights to a whole range of destinations from the home airport. The free app is available for iOS and Android.

Google Trips: All documents together

Google, the all-embracing data octopus, now also takes care of travelers, and very well. The free Google Trips for Android and iOS automatically detects airline tickets, hotel reservations and more when they arrive in a Google Mail account. These are then immediately available in the app – including the booking code, terminal and so on. After landing, the travel app suggests ways to get from the airport to the city and even estimates taxi costs quite accurately. Google’s passion for data collection also makes itself useful on the spot and provides tips for the day based on user behaviour. The information about the destination can also be downloaded completely in advance – useful if you don’t have a data connection there right away, or to read some information during the flight. The only drawback is that Google Trips is currently only available in English.

TripAdvisor: The Classic

Without this app no one should travel anymore. TripAdvisor helps you to find a hotel and suggests activities and restaurants. Countless reviews from other travelers ensure that you can get a comprehensive picture of a hotel before booking: Is the hotel more popular with families or is it a noisy party house? The experiences of previous guests are very helpful here, so it is worth reading carefully. Especially when searching for accommodations, the different filters are very practical to get only hotels or only Bed & Breakfasts displayed or to add a maximum price. If you are looking for a restaurant, the app supports you with tips on the surroundings and also starts navigating there right away.

Spotted by Locals: Tips from locals

There are more than the usual travel tips for more than 50 cities in Europe and a dozen in North America: Spotted By Locals helps you discover a city off the beaten track, because the tips there come from hand-picked locals. They recommend authentic restaurants, friendly accommodations – or, as in the case of Hamburg, a fish sandwich stand. The app works completely offline, so there are no roaming fees during the visit. The best smartphone travel guide costs 3.99 euros per city, the app is available for iOS and Android.

Hotel Tonight: For the better sleeper

It started as an app for last-minute hotel search, today Hotel Tonight can also book up to a week in advance and often turns out to be the app that offers the best deal. The elegant interface makes the booking a pleasure and offers an appealing presentation of the partner hotels. Spontaneous travellers who only want to decide on accommodation at their destination will find accommodation far away from the usual business hotels in almost every metropolis in the world and will also save a good part of the usual overnight price. Surely: A night in New York City will still not be really cheap, but nevertheless overnight stays in very good and original hotels for less than 100 dollars are possible.

Citymapper: The better Google Maps

Anyone who has to rely on public transport in a foreign city knows this: after a first glance at the route network, you won’t understand a thing. Google Maps is often not a great help here, because in many cities it only covers a part of the offer and does not take carpooling services such as Uber into account. Citymapper does a much better job: The app integrates all possible available offers like rental bikes, car sharing and more and calculates from these and the timetables of the public transport of several routes to the destination. Depending on the city, there may even be extra tips, such as the option to get on a particular section of the train for shorter transfer times, as the app does in New York, for example. For the navigation in the city certainly the best App, and this free of charge for iPhone and Android.

LiveTrekker: For the memories

Immediately after the return the memory of the journey begins to fade? LiveTrekker can help against this. The app creates a detailed travel diary including a map with all recorded photos, videos and audio entries. The reports can be shared online with friends. A low roaming rate should be available for use, whereby the app also offers an offline Moudus in which it only synchronizes data via W-LAN. LiveTrekker is free and available for iOS and Android.
